Make people believe that you have shit figured out. Hell, even believe it. Act positive. Be at peace and hopeful. Get comfortable. Like your life, even. Forget that people can be terrible to each other and not even know why they’re doing it. Rest on your laurels. Allow yourself to be naive again. Try to forget why you used to be cynical.
As soon as you do all of these things you’ll be a prime subject. Perfectly prepared. You’ll be nice and ready for a good, solid betrayal. Don’t worry—this isn’t the first time you’ve been a fool, been stupid enough to get blindsided. You’re a real slow learner. Now go sit in the corner and suck your thumb and listen to the National.
